Educator’s Statement

The students of Cumberland Trace learned so much about the history of quilts and barn quilts in Kentucky and surrounding states. I love the simplicity of how their designs work together. Students of all abilities completed a quilt square and then we chose some inspiring pieces to make into 4×4 Barn Quilts. Students worked in groups to paint the barn quilts. Some of the quilts are quite active with strokes demonstrating their excitement at simply getting to paint! The exhibit is beautiful in its childish playfulness with lines, mark making and shapes. The quilts demonstrate the students’ new found knowledge of Folk art in their own families and history and purpose for creating a beautiful barn quilt!
